Central Heating Boilers

We never think about our central heating boiler until something goes wrong, but these domestic workhorses operate several times a day, every day of the year to provide heat and hot water for our homes, so choosing a reliable manufacturer and the best type of boiler for your home is an important decision.

At Discount Plumbing Centre we supply gas, oil burning and the newer electric central heating boilers by established, reliable manufacturers. Gas is the most popular and we offer choices of heat-only, system and combi condensing boilers.

What type of boiler do I need?

This depends on your home and what supplies you have to the home. For example homes without a gas supply have mainly had to rely on oil-fired boilers in the past, but now the new electric central heating boilers can provide the same energy efficiency as oil-fired boilers, so there is now a choice.

In the main most homes will use a gas boiler (99% are condensing boilers) and here we have predominantly three choices: -

1/ Heat-only boilers
2/ System Boilers
3/ Combi Boilers

Heat-only Boilers

Still the most popular first choice for most homes these boilers provide hot water to our radiators and store hot water in a tank. They have to be used in conjunction with other components, like a central heating pump to achieve their purpose.

The advantages are that you can use several hot taps at once, they are easy to replace and can be used in larger houses with high hot water demand. The disadvantage is the volume of hot water available depends on the size of your tank and you need to insulate the tank well to avoid rapid heat loss.

System Boilers

An ideal choice for most smaller homes, system boilers operate in the same way as heat-only boilers except they tend to be more compact and incorporate the central heating pump within the boiler. They also do not require an expansion tank so save additional space within the home. Hot water is stored in a tank.

Combi Boilers

Now very popular because combi boilers combine the functions of heating and hot water supply on demand within one boiler. The ultimate space saving boiler because there is no requirement for a hot water cylinder, expansion tank, or external pump, so is an ideal choice for smaller homes.

The disadvantages are that they are not suitable for larger homes, can only supply full pressure to one hot tap at a time and there is a slight delay in supply of hot water until the boiler has fired up to the required temperature..
